l'art.
Once upon a time, in the middle of night, while channel surfing, I came across this documentary about Couture at Chanel. It was not a story about grandeur, about la Coco who revolutionized fashion for women forever. It was a story about hard-working, dedicated, middle-aged, French women, who dedicated their lives to the art of fashion: Couture. They go days without sleep sewing beads and feathers onto the bridal gown. They start their dresses over and over and over again, weeks of work down the drain, just to meet Karl's particular fancy. Oh, and then there is the seventy some odd year old lady who sews all of Chanel's trims from scratch, in the middle of night, because during the day she has to tend to her cows and her land. Couture is an art. It is fashion at its best, its purest form. Yet, beyond the pomp and circumstance, there is an entire industry of unknown trade workers, no artists, that aren't so concerned about the latest trends, but about keeping a tradition alive, about their livelihood. It is tradition that creates the magic of couture.
