Carey Mulligan and the Miu Miu Saga

I was just looking over the pics from last night's MET gala to come the the conclusion that I really enjoy Carey Mulligan's fashion choices. Both last night and at the Oscars, she presented herself as young, hip, and classy, and in my book, that is the winning combination for any girl in their early to mid twenties. I really like the fact that she adds a certain wit to her look, as well. Remember the  mini kitchen utensils on her Oscar dress? Really, though, I just think that her style is indicative of my generation, of who we are and how we dress, at least for right now.

With this in mind though, I have to admit that I don't know much about Mulligan besides the fact that she part of the new, hot, young Hollywood, that she is dating Shia LaBeouf, and that she is apparently a very talented, young lady. I can't really comment on that last remark though, because, frankly, I haven't seen any of her work. So, why am I suddenly enamored with Miss Carey? I think it may have something to do with my current obsession with Miu Miu's spring 2010 collection.

My favorites from the graduating class of Central Saint Martins' MA in fashion... a look at where fashion is heading, if you consider that this is where the great ones train.

l'art.

Once upon a time, in the middle of night, while channel surfing, I came across this documentary about Couture at Chanel. It was not a story about grandeur, about la Coco who revolutionized fashion for women forever. It was a story about hard-working, dedicated, middle-aged, French women, who dedicated their lives to the art of fashion: Couture.

understated whimsy

I have this image of the perfect spring style. I see the perfect woman having this understated whimsy about her. Think peasant dresses with big, rimmed hats, flowy blouses and high wasted shorts, over-sized sunglasses, lots of tan, leather, and distressed jean. It's mish-mash of late 60s early 70s vintage, effortless grunge, innocent simplicity, and Italian sophistication, all very organic... if that makes any sense. Really, I have this image of the sun exploding into the room, illuminating its subjects like angels, creating a sense of carless happiness. The best example I can give you of this is Sofia Coppola`s Virgin Suicides. It is by far one of my favorite movies of all time, but aside from that fact, Coppola is brilliant at playing with the light to create beautiful images of whimsy.  Here are some more current images in the same spirit...

When I was a six year old girl... (or an Ode to the Early Nineties)

When I was a six year old girl, I would wake up to the smell of my grandmother's homemade baking powder biscuits.

When I was a six year old girl, I was obsessed with this dress that my favorite Barbie doll wore. It was a long sleeved mini-dress with a psychedelic neon print. I dreamed about one day being able to wear a dress just like it while driving a pink convertible in the California sun.
